Burton City Council approves appointments, contracts, lighting changes and budget amendments

The council reappointed Yolanda Ferguson and approved the appointment of Mitchell Young to a city position; members also authorized the mayor and city clerk to execute a contract with Orchard, Hilton & McClinton. Council approved changes to street-lighting services with Consumers Energy in response to a prior accident and identified poor lighting at the site.
The most substantial budget change was a transfer within the city’s fire fund: the council approved increasing building maintenance and supplies by $84,525 so insurance proceeds allocated for Fire Station 1 repairs in the prior fiscal year can be used in the current year. As the fire chief explained to the council, “the insurance gave us the payout … it was supposed to be carried over from last year to this year's budget, and it didn't happen. So this is an amendment to make that happen.”
The council also approved a police-fund amendment adding $11,000. Councilmembers approved acceptance of police labor terms and made a minor textual amendment to another personnel-related motion before voting. Finally, the council approved an ordinance amendment to chapter 30.03.
All measures were approved by recorded roll call; the meeting record shows affirmative votes by councilmembers present for the items listed. The council set its next regular meeting for Sept. 2, 2025, at 7 p.m.
