Michigan Learner Wallet pitched as digital talent profile to link students to jobs and college

Dr. Sean Williams of Eaton RESA and Dr. Brian Pyle, a former state CTE director, told the subcommittee that the Michigan Learner Wallet creates a portable, competency-based record students can share with employers and colleges.
Dr. Pyle described the Wallet as a tool that lets students assemble a "talent profile" showing industry certificates, program completion badges tied to the state’s 51 approved CTE programs and work-based learning badges. "The My Learner Wallet allows a student to build a digital portable talent profile that demonstrates their skills, abilities, badging, and credentialing, that they can share with employers," Pyle said.
Presenters said the Wallet launched in pilot form in 2022, expanded with additional funding in 2024, and has been used for tutoring and diploma issuance pilots; they estimated 'tens of thousands' of students currently have wallets and said the issuer usually funds wallets so learners retain lifetime access. The Wallet supports multiple profiles so students can tailor what they share for different employers or scholarship/college applications.
Members asked how students share the Wallet with employers; presenters said students receive a shareable link they can email, text or post publicly. Dr. Pyle described employer pilots and urged alignment across the 51 CTE programs and 16 Michigan Works agencies to build employer trust and scale adoption. The subcommittee did not vote on funding or policy during the session.
