Committee concurs on bill standardizing POST training grace periods

The Senate Judiciary Committee concurred in House Bill 75, a measure brought by Rep. Steve Gist and requested by the Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council to standardize training timelines across public‑safety disciplines.
Representative Steve Gist told the committee HB 75 clarifies that individuals who have a break in service of more than five years would receive a one‑year grace period to complete basic training across all POST‑certified disciplines; the bill also clarifies how equivalency and discipline‑specific rules apply after breaks in service.
Timothy Allred, director of the POST Council, said the bill is a cleanup to make language consistent across the statute and to ensure correctional, detention and probation/parole officers have the same standard. Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter, who serves as chair of the POST Council, also voiced support.
In executive action the committee concurred in HB 75 by voice vote; a senator volunteered to carry the bill to the Senate floor.
