Detention center reports higher daily counts, lists facility upgrades and programs

Chief deputy JJ reported September averages of 177 daily inmates (high 189, low 169) and 244 admissions/releases; the detention center reported community service labor equivalent to a $103,680 savings and identified facility needs including a fire alarm system upgrade estimated at $100,000 and replacement of a 34-year-old generator.
Chief deputy JJ presented the Mason County Detention Center report for Sept. 1–30 and briefed the court on population, programs and facility maintenance needs.
JJ reported a highest daily population of 189, a lowest daily count of 169 and a monthly average of 177. Total admissions and releases for the month were 244 (182 males, 62 females). Class D inmates and supervised community crews performed work around the county; JJ said community service hours totaled 8,640 and estimated a notional savings to the county of roughly $103,680 when valued at $12 per hour.
Programs and facility issues included ongoing work in the kitchen to improve equipment, a needed upgrade to the fire alarm system estimated at $100,000, and replacement planning for the facility’s 34-year-old generator (cost not yet provided). The sally-port door spring also required repair, and staff had requested quotes for overhead-door work.
JJ noted facility participation in statewide training events and upcoming activities (a drive-through Halloween event Oct. 31 and instructor training Dec. 8–12). The court accepted the report by motion and adjourned that agenda item.
