Cairo council previews local rules for electric-vehicle charging stations amid fire-safety concerns

The Cairo City Council held an initial policy discussion on local regulation of electric-vehicle charging stations after staff said state and national codes currently offer limited guidance for some public, high-speed chargers.
The fire chief briefed the council on hazards associated with Level 3 and Level 4 charging infrastructure, noting these chargers operate at higher voltages and can present fire risks for first responders. "Charging is a major hazard with electric vehicles," the chief said, and staff recommended local minimum setback distances, emergency-disconnect requirements and other measures to give the fire department safer access during incidents.
City Manager Gail said staff and the building official have begun drafting model language and that the city would look to regional guidance (Southwest Georgia Regional Commission) and examples from other cities when preparing a local ordinance. Council members agreed the matter warranted a local ordinance and directed staff and the city attorney to prepare formal draft language for introduction at a later meeting.
