The Select Board discussed the proposed town manager employment contract that would run from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027. Members said they were broadly comfortable with the contract’s compensation and benefit language but asked legal counsel to review termination-for-cause and conduct-related clauses to ensure clarity and town protections.
Board members proposed incorporating a clear timeline for goals and objectives into the contract and annual-review process. Staff presented several draft review templates and recommended a concise evaluation form with comment fields; the board favored embedding SMART goals, using quarterly check-ins to document performance throughout the year, and completing the formal annual evaluation at the last regular April meeting or the first regular May meeting.
Town Manager Steve said he was comfortable proceeding with counsel review. The board asked staff to route the contract to town counsel for a quick turnaround and to return with any recommended edits at the May 5 or May 12 meeting so a final contract could be signed before town meeting if possible.
No final contract signature occurred at the April 28 meeting pending counsel review and the board’s final approval.
