Parks and Recreation previews packed July 4 schedule, Back-to-School Bash to serve 500 children

Chloe Hancock of Parks and Recreation told council that July 4 in The Colony will be "a jam packed day for us," with an annual 5K/fun run starting at 7:30 a.m. at Stewart Creek Park, parade applications open, and a Liberty by the Lake festival beginning at 6 p.m. featuring live music, rides, food trucks, Lucha Libre and a fireworks finale. Hancock noted the city has named Chief Vauxhall as grand marshal for the parade.
Hancock walked through festival logistics, including multiple showings (6:30 and 8 p.m.) and community contests such as a watermelon-eating contest with no overall age limit but separate age categories to keep competition fair. When asked about age groups, Hancock said there is "no age limit" and staff will use different age segments to keep the contest fair.
Parks staff also announced a Back-to-School Bash scheduled for July 23 with two registration sessions, and a commitment to provide free school supplies to 500 children ages 5 to 12. Hancock invited businesses and residents to support the event and provided registration information (playtc.ticketleap.com) and an email contact (events@thecolonytx.gov).
"So July 4, we've got tons going on," Hancock said, encouraging residents to attend the parade and festival.
