The Maplewood City Council voted Jan. 13 to approve consent agenda items G1–G9, including authorization to partner with the Ramsey‑Washington Metro Watershed District on pond dredging and to submit an application for Ramsey County’s SCORE (Select Committee on Recycling and the Environment) grant.
City staff explained that the council previously adopted a $330,000 budget for pond maintenance on Nov. 25, 2024, but recent coring tests showed relatively clean sediment; the estimated cost for the dredging work discussed at the meeting is $138,000, with the final contract amount to be determined by final quantities and disposal needs. Mr. Love said the watershed district conducts surveys to locate sediment, assess quantities and test for contamination, which can affect disposal costs.
On the SCORE grant, staff said the county requires a city council authorization to submit and that any award would be returned to council for final action. Councilmember Bill Lisette asked how dredging sites are selected; staff said city staff select ponds they believe need cleaning, the watershed district verifies quantities and contamination, and projects are then aggregated to gain economies of scale in bidding. The consent motion passed by voice vote.
