The Pewaukee Common Council voted to move the city's organized trick-or-treat event to Saturday, Oct. 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., following a divided public discussion and a 4'3 council vote. Councilmember (Speaker 7) moved the change; the motion carried after public comment and council deliberation.
Residents who spoke during public comment framed the debate in safety and tradition. Jim Eichensere, a resident of Arrowhead Trail, said Saturday avoids bus traffic in neighborhoods and called Saturday "the best choice." Pam Mila of Springdale Estates said the event is "a big deal in all of Pewaukee" and that moving start times later would compress preparation time for families: "You're not giving kids time to come home and get ready." Becky Wagner said Friday traffic and exhausted bus drivers raised safety risks; "Why set yourselves up for a situation that could result in a tragedy?" Jeff Hunholz urged keeping the event on Oct. 30 (Halloween) itself but said a 5 p.m. start could address bus concerns.
Council debate centered on local bus schedules and neighborhood preferences. Councilmember (Speaker 4) noted several constituents reported buses finish routes by 4:20'4:30 p.m., arguing that shifting to 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. would reduce bus-related hazards. Other councilmembers reported neighborhood polls and calls that favored holding the event on Saturday.
After hearing residents and council discussion, Councilmember (Speaker 7) moved to set trick-or-treat for Saturday, Oct. 25, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; a second was recorded in the meeting but not named in the transcript. The mayor announced the motion passed 4'3.
The council did not direct staff to take additional safety actions in the same motion. Next steps are simply the scheduling change; the city will post the event date per the council's vote.
