Sergeant at Arms briefs House Fish and Wildlife committee on evacuation, lockdown and first‑aid protocols

Roy Valdez, House Sergeant at Arms staff assigned to the House Fish and Wildlife and Parks Committee, told members about safety and emergency procedures in the committee room, including evacuation routes and lockdown protocols.

Valdez described the primary exit route and the outside rally point at the historical society and museum and advised members to take personal belongings such as keys and coats when evacuating. He noted first‑aid kits and fire extinguishers are located throughout the building and said staff can call 911 in an emergency. Valdez said staff have practiced protocols and will assist members in moving to the House chamber or other safe locations when necessary.

Valdez also described lockdown procedures and how staff would barricade the room in an active‑shooter scenario. "We will barricade this room if necessary, using these tables, against the doors," he said, adding that an alternate exit via a window exists but would require breaking glass.

Members asked clarifying questions about how doors open and whether barricading would be effective; Representative Paul Fielder noted that some doors open outward, which could affect barricading plans. Valdez thanked the committee and said staff are available to assist during the session.
