Johnson County officials told department heads on June 17 that the county will begin phased training for its new Workday enterprise system, with basic and manager sessions slated to start in August and a separate, restricted financial course for employees who will submit procurement and accounts-payable work.
A county presenter said the basic classes will use an 18-seat training classroom in the Elections Room and a training tenant that mirrors the live system so staff can practice as themselves. "The basic trainings will be 18 users with laptops and a couple trainers," the presenter said. Planners estimated the county must get about 600 people through training and will stagger sessions and locations to accommodate different offices.
Officials emphasized limiting who receives financial-level access. An attendee warned, "It should not be your entire office... This is a financial liability, and you should really be looking at who should have access to this level of information." County staff said departments should nominate the person or small set of people โ often the person preparing claims and a manager who approves them โ who will receive the financial training.
Presenters also described operational changes that will move human-resources tasks into Workday, including open enrollment. One presenter said, "With Workday, you actually have to go in and acknowledge all of your benefits..." and another noted the county will use Workday to process procurement and payments: "That's how we are gonna pay our bills from now on."
Next steps: department heads and elected officials were asked to provide the names and job functions of staff who need financial access so training planners can schedule sessions. Staff reiterated that help files and phone support will be available during the rollout.
The county did not announce exact class dates beyond the August target or list the cost of implementation; departments were told to expect additional communications as training materials and schedules are finalized.
