Capital Development Committee approves DOC capital-transfer to repair prison water systems

The Capital Development Committee unanimously approved a Department of Corrections supplemental capital-transfer to shift leftover funds from a completed Buena Vista sanitary sewer project toward repairs and replacement of water-tank assets at the East Canyon/Canyon City prison complex.
Department presenters told the committee that the Buena Vista sanitary sewer project is complete and that the agency realized ongoing fee savings. The presenters said that just over $446,000 in capital-renewal funds are now available for reallocation. The funds will support repairs to an older tank and costs related to bringing a recently delivered replacement tank into service; department staff said the new tank is expected to be operational in December.
Committee members noted the urgency of the repairs. The department said the tanks provide domestic water and fire-suppression capability and collectively serve about 31% of the department's population, which the presenters stated is 5,024 incarcerated individuals at the East Canyon/Canyon City complex.
A committee member moved to support the supplemental request, and the panel voted unanimously (5-0) to approve the transfer.
The department thanked the committee and said it will return with updates as the replacement tank is commissioned and repairs proceed. The committee did not adopt additional directions beyond approval of the supplemental transfer.
