Executive Committee sets 2026 General Assembly start date for Jan. 14, 2026

Director Michael DeCicco of the Office of Legislative Legal Services informed the committee that, by operation of statute and the committee's rules, the second regular session of the 75th General Assembly would default to Jan. 14, 2026 unless members adopt a joint resolution to pick a different date.
Members discussed the tradeoffs: some favored an earlier Jan. 7 start to finish earlier in May and avoid "spring fever" on the floor, while others noted holiday impacts on staff and drafting timelines and the potential for construction delays. "If that means people don't have to get back to work until January 2 and they've got some breathing room on those final bills, it feels like a nice nod," one member said in support of the Jan. 14 date.
Speaker 6 moved to let the 2026 session automatically begin on 01/14/2026 "by operation of Section 2-2-303.5 of the Colorado Revised Statutes." The motion passed on a roll call the chair recorded as "That passes 5 to 1."
