Ross outlined where most of the proposed increases would go: about $30,000 for salaries and about $20,000 for engineering, which together roughly match the $50,000 request. He said the port’s application strategy will likely require both engineering work and operational expertise and recommended engaging professionals familiar with port operations.
Ross also emphasized that successful grant proposals often require a substantial local match. “The successful funding proposals that I’ve reviewed show a local match,” he said, pointing to the need to demonstrate financial and operational commitment when applying to entities such as the U.S. Department of Transportation or the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
Commissioner Mr. Roberts moved to accept the budget as presented; Mr. Hudson seconded the motion. The commission approved the recommendation by voice vote.
Background and next steps: Ross said the port will pursue consultants and may visit other port directors in the state to inform its proposals. The board of supervisors will ultimately decide on any appropriation; this vote accepts the port director’s draft budget and transmits the request for consideration.
