Commissioners say county budget can’t absorb a $100,000/year health funding request without tradeoffs

County manager Jay Harrington told commissioners on Sept. 15 that Routt County received a funding request from Northwest Colorado Health seeking $100,000 per year for each of the next three years.
Harrington said the county’s budget is not balanced and that staff will meet to develop strategies; if the board were to fund the request it would require identifying cuts or alternate revenue to make room in the budget. Commissioners asked Harrington and Finance Director Dan to meet and return with options so the board could decide whether to supply funding before an Oct. 1 announcement by the requestors.
Several commissioners said they were surprised the request arrived in its current form and asked staff to explore whether partner organizations or broader regional approaches could meet the need without committing county general funds. Commissioners also said they wanted to avoid ad hoc funding decisions without budget context.
No final funding decision was made. Staff will bring back analyses of the county’s ability to fund the request and historical HRC and other support amounts for context.
