Pueblo County staff preliminarily backs funding for volunteer fire radios, weighs veterans event sponsorship
Summary
At a Sept. 25 BOCC work session, staff presented two outside funding requests: $1,600 to support West Park Fire Protection District radio batteries or replacements and a sponsorship request for the Pueblo Latino Veterans 'Legacy of Courage' event. Commissioners asked for quantity and recurrence details before finalizing allocations.

Tommy Farrell, a county staff presenter, asked the Pueblo County Board of County Commissioners on Sept. 25 to consider two outside funding requests.
The first request, from West Park Fire Protection District, sought approximately $1,600 to replace or maintain digital trunk radios and batteries, which Farrell said are the district’s primary means of emergency communication. Farrell noted the board had authorized a similar sum last year from the county’s aid-to-other-entities budget. Commissioners asked for clarification on whether the request is a recurring maintenance need and how many batteries or radios are required; Farrell said the applicant did not specify quantities in the packet and offered to follow up.
County Manager Bena Genacio told the board the relevant budget line showed the $1,600 was available and that staff would confirm whether the hold-on or ATOE funding line would be the most appropriate source. Multiple commissioners said they support funding the request for public-safety reasons but asked staff to confirm whether this is an annual request so the county can plan accordingly.
The second request was a sponsorship for the Pueblo Latino Veterans 'Legacy of Courage' ceremony on Oct. 4. Farrell said the form listed $1,500 (he noted a possible typo and said he would confirm last year’s amount). Commissioners discussed sponsorship options — individual tickets reportedly cost $50 and table sponsorships were described in the packet — and several suggested funding two table sponsors (roughly $1,000) to maximize veteran attendance. Farrell said he would follow up with the precise sponsorship level and ticket allocation before bringing the item back for final action.
Next steps: staff will confirm the radio quantities, whether the West Park request is recurring, and the correct sponsorship figure for the veterans event; funding decisions were left preliminary pending those clarifications.
