Pueblo County BOCC narrows interim coroner field to five candidates for private interviews

The Pueblo County Board of County Commissioners voted Sept. 11 to advance five candidates for the interim coroner position to private interviews after ranking 16 initial applicants.
The presiding commissioner said the county received 16 applications and that commissioners would use an online survey system to rank candidates; interviews will be individual and not public to avoid undue pressure on applicants, the board said. The chair emphasized the process preserves transparency where legally possible by holding public deliberations on the final selection while keeping interviews private.
Commissioners described criteria used to evaluate candidates: experience with medicolegal death investigations, relationships with death‑care providers, knowledge of coroner statutes and requirements, team leadership and budget management experience, and community trust. Commissioners also said a Weld County coroner assisted in reviewing applications to provide professional insight.
The clerk read the top results in order: Gregory Greyheck; Solania Macaulay Pachicha; Justin Youngren; Felicia McQueen; Jessica Martinez; Elizabeth Sexton Drake (ranked sixth). Board members discussed a score cutoff and agreed to advance the top five (the five double‑digit scorers) to interviews beginning the next day. The motion to forward the top five was moved, seconded and approved on the record.
Interviews will be conducted individually by each commissioner; deliberation and the final appointment will be public and scheduled later, the board said.
