County treasurer reports drop in delinquent-tax accounts, urges residents to apply for assistance

Granite County's treasurer reported progress in collecting delinquent property taxes at the Sept. 16 meeting, saying outreach after a second notice mailing produced responses and payments.
The treasurer said the delinquent list decreased from 326 accounts totaling $429,004.69 (as of Aug. 19) to 232 accounts totaling $325,006.31 as of the meeting, and reported total collections of $113,005.96 since Aug. 19. The office is working through multi-year delinquencies and noted some accounts date back many years and will require additional follow-up.
Treasurer staff described outreach steps, corrections for parcel-record problems and coordination with the Department of Revenue on technical issues. The treasurer also encouraged residents to apply for the Housing Assistance Fund (HAF) program and similar resources that can pay back taxes or utilities for eligible households.
Commissioners asked whether department-of-revenue responsiveness and media coverage affected collections; staff said some callers reported confusion but that the office is working closely with taxpayers and outside vendors to clarify notices and records. The treasurer noted that some county-specific collection tactics used elsewhere might be considered but that legal and operational constraints apply.
The board accepted the report and requested continued follow-up and coordination with social-service agencies to identify households that might qualify for assistance programs.
