The superintendent opened the meeting’s update with highlights from a recent conference in Madison titled “creating conditions for success,” saying the sessions included legal updates on Act 10, policy and handbook relationships, leadership development and federal and state legislative updates. The superintendent previewed the district’s unofficial third‑Friday count (Sept. 19) and told the board the district appears likely to show a slight increase in kindergarten through 12th‑grade enrollment while 4K enrollment has declined from last year’s record high. He said official resident and open‑enrollment counts will be presented at the Oct. 13 board meeting. When asked whether statewide registration trends would be available in two weeks, he said he would bring any available state comparison data to the Oct. 13 meeting but was not certain the full state data would be ready by then.
The board returned the Redhawk recognition program, honoring five staff members nominated by colleagues: Abby Langer (music program), Renee Smith (kindergarten, East), Crystal Gross (sixth grade, Northside), Kelly Smith (sixth grade, Northside) and Toni Jorgensen (special education paraprofessional, East). The superintendent said the program will continue monthly at the second board meeting. The board also received an HR update noting Alexis Nelson joined the district office as an HR specialist on Sept. 8.
The superintendent closed the update by thanking staff and board members and reminding the board of upcoming committee meetings and School Board Appreciation Week in October.
