Committee recommends $158,030 Johnson and Sons contract for district-wide asphalt work

The Germantown School District Buildings & Grounds Committee voted July 15 to send a positive recommendation to the finance committee to approve district-wide asphalt services with Johnson and Sons Paving for an amount not to exceed $158,030, funded from Fund 41.
Mr. Lord, who presented the item, said staff solicited bids from five contractors for asphalt work listed in the district’s 2025 capital project list and the five-year capital improvement plan. He told the committee Johnson and Sons won three of the five bid packages and recommended selecting that firm for consistency of mobilization and oversight across multiple school sites.
“Johnson and Sons paving won 3 out of the 5,” Mr. Lord said. He also corrected a previously circulated figure, saying the $163,000 total had included an option that was removed: “The correct dollar amount is $158,030.”
The work covers Amy Bell Elementary, County Line Elementary, MacArthur Elementary, Kennedy Middle School and Germantown High School and includes seal-and-stripe work for staff and visitor lots, bus lanes and parking areas. The Northeast playground area was listed with an option to mill and pave; Mr. Lord confirmed the Northeast parking lot will be a mill-and-repave rather than striping only.
Committee members asked whether the Kennedy Middle School track would be upgraded to a competition surface. Mr. Lord said the plan is to pave the gravel track to regulation lane widths and stripe it for practice use but not to install a higher-cost competition surface. He said the district consulted physical education teachers and high-school track coaches and concluded a paved practice surface best matched current needs and budget constraints.
Mr. Lord said the RFP sets a completion target close to Aug. 22, roughly two weeks before school starts, and that Johnson and Sons indicated the schedule is feasible.
A committee member moved to forward a positive recommendation to the finance committee to approve the 2025 district-wide asphalt services contract with Johnson and Sons Paving, not to exceed $158,030 (Fund 41); the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The finance committee will receive the recommendation for formal funding approval and contract award.
