Doctor Springer presented the Douglas County School System's five‑year enrollment projection and said the district's current projection for the coming year is 25,187 students. He described the methodology and longer-term tracking that informs the projection and noted the district has eight years of historical counts that smooth transient enrollment fluctuations.
The projection matters for budgeting and staffing. A board member asked whether interactive dashboards or predictive‑analytics software could improve planning; Doctor Springer said the district uses a five‑year approach and that commercial AI tools would likely produce similar results if fed the district's data. "We use 5 years of data to project what ours are going to be," he said, adding that tools such as Copilot would “give us pretty much the same numbers” when the same inputs are provided. Springer agreed to produce the requested five‑year forecast for board planning.
Springer summarized trends the board should note: year‑end counts often rise because of transient moves into the district; kindergarten enrollment is beginning to rebound; and high‑school cohorts are comparatively stable. He also said a presentation on new apartment construction and other local housing developments—expected to affect enrollment—will be presented at the board's September work session.
The board did not vote on enrollment policy or software procurement at the meeting. Staff said they would provide the extended five‑year projections and supporting data prior to the September presentation so the board can consider the budget implications in the next cycle.
