At the Aug. 18 Fayette County school board meeting, the district spotlighted a performance by the Tates Creek High School percussion ensemble and representatives from UK Federal Credit Union described student-run in-school branches and internship pathways.
The Fayette County Board of Education opened its Aug. 18 meeting with a student arts spotlight featuring the Tates Creek High School percussion ensemble.
Director of Fine Arts Catherine Lauther introduced the performance and thanked district leaders for supporting arts programming. Assistant band director Brent Hunt described growth in the Tates Creek band and ensemble achievements, including selection to perform at the Kentucky Music Educators Association state conference.
Sophomore Elena Hunt, one member of the featured quartet, described the rehearsal intensity and what the experience meant to her: "As you listen to this piece, my one hope is that it brings you joy as it did me," she said.
Superintendent Manny Liggins and board members praised the students' work.
Separately in the superintendent's report, Michael Adams, program manager for external partnerships, introduced a partnership with UK Federal Credit Union. UKFCU representatives said the credit union has supported the district through financial-literacy workshops, student-run branches (the first opened Feb. 2023 at Frederick Douglass High School, with a second branch planned for Tate's Creek this fall), and internship opportunities that have led to part-time employment for graduates.
The board acknowledged the role of community partners in supporting student programs as the meeting moved into budget discussions.
