Burton council approves appointments, memorial contracts and multiple labor pacts

The Burton City Council voted to approve several routine and project-related items during its regular meeting, including an appointment to the Zoning Board of Appeals, new memorial contracts and multiple labor agreements.

The council unanimously approved the meeting agenda and minutes from the July 21, 2025 meeting before moving into action items. The council approved attorney billing procedures for the city (transcript: "Billing Miller Johnson") and authorized the appointment of Gary Kautz to the Zoning Board of Appeals; Kautz was not present and had apologized in advance.

On memorial projects, the council authorized the mayor and city clerk to enter a contract for the Fire and Police Memorial and discussed plans for Veterans Memorial improvements. Backup materials showed two design/price options; councilmembers asked to see preliminary drawings before selecting a final approach. The motion to proceed with contracting authority carried.

Council also approved collective-bargaining agreements affecting municipal workers. The AFSCME agreement was approved as written. The SEIU agreement was accepted and authorized; the council likewise approved Teamsters-related labor items. All labor motions passed on roll-call votes.

Council members praised the city Department of Public Works for a rapid street/driveway repair that addressed a resident’s safety concern. The council set its next regular meeting for 08/18/2025 at 7 p.m. Agendas and minutes are posted at www.burtonmi.gov.
