Board authorizes sheriff to seek SRP grant and accepts strategic traffic-enforcement grant funding

Muskegon County commissioners authorized the sheriff’s office to apply for an FY2026 Secondary Road Patrol (SRP) grant and approved applying for and accepting an FY2026 Strategic Traffic Enforcement grant through the Office of Highway Safety Planning.
A presenter said the SRP grant is an annual program the county has historically received and that the 2026 allocation represents a decrease from the inflated 2025 amount; staff said a one-time statewide appropriation in 2025 temporarily raised the program’s funding level and the current figure returns the county closer to typical historical levels.
On the Strategic Traffic Enforcement grant the board approved the county acting as fiduciary. Staff described that the county would receive personnel and equipment funds (an amount for personnel and a smaller equipment allocation was described) and then distribute enforcement funds to participating police agencies for seat-belt, impaired-driving and speed enforcement campaigns.
Commissioners recorded a vote to approve the traffic-enforcement grant and the chair acknowledged the vote. The board expects staff to proceed with grant applications and to return with final award paperwork and any required budget adjustments.
