Kalamazoo road commission updates: joint meeting scheduled, two road projects complete, chip seal work underway

The managing director briefed the Board of County Road Commissioners on projects and meetings, saying the commission will hold a joint meeting with Kalamazoo Township on Monday, July 7 at 6 p.m. for a presentation, with the township's regular meeting to follow.

Project updates included completion of the Sprinkle Road project north of the business loop near Comstock Avenue and completion of Shaver Road from the City of Portage to the noted terminus. Reconstruct work is underway on Q Avenue in Pavilion and U Avenue in Schoolcraft, and two primary-network wood bridge rehabilitations are in progress in Brady Township, the managing director said.

The managing director also provided a chip-seal schedule: work is mostly finished on the west side of the county (Oshtemo) and crews were moving into an area identified in the transcript as 'Texas' before proceeding through southern-tier villages; a second round of chip seal is planned tied to additional primary road projects. The office will be closed on Friday for the Fourth of July; for emergencies related to road hazards the managing director advised calling 911.

During commissioners' time Vice Chair Stehauer noted constituent concerns about speed-limit signage on River Street and encouraged residents to submit service requests; commissioners also reiterated hiring needs and expressed optimism about ongoing state-level road funding discussions with Representative Matt Hall and the governor.

Next steps: staff will prepare the presentation for the July 7 joint meeting and continue project work and chip-seal operations per schedule.
