Detroit school board hears superintendent: enrollment near 51,000; district projects another surplus

Superintendent Doctor Vidi told the Detroit Public Schools Community District board on Wednesday that the district had 50,893 students enrolled for the 2025–26 school year and expects to end the fiscal year with another surplus.

Vidi, presenting pre‑audited financials through June, said tax collections on the 13‑mill capital debt levy and 18‑mill operating levy totaled roughly $14 million and $14.5 million respectively and that revenue is running ahead of forecast because of higher interest earnings and one‑time funds from Wayne RISA and federal sources. He said expenditures are tracking below budget and the district closed the month with about 13.3 weeks of available cash.

The financial presentation framed a broader opening‑of‑school update in which Vidi highlighted recruitment and retention efforts: roughly 20 teacher vacancies remain in core subjects with only a handful of schools reporting multiple openings, and the district is hiring about 570 academic interventionists focused on literacy. He said many vacancies have been reduced through work with the Detroit Federation of Teachers and principal recruitment efforts.

Why it matters: Enrollment and cash position determine state and local funding levels and the district's ability to staff schools and sustain programs. Vidi said the 1% enrollment growth goal equals roughly 500 students and that increasing retention — not just new recruits — is a priority.

Board members asked for more precise canvassing and enrollment data after Vidi said the district's outreach had visited 57,671 homes and held about 17 Summer on the Block events with roughly 5,000 attendees. Several members requested disaggregated canvassing results by feeder pattern and a breakdown of how many canvassed households were current DPSCD students. Vidi said he would follow up with staff and provide the board the requested details.

Board action and votes: The board approved the meeting agenda, tied and accepted grouped minutes from several meetings, approved routine consent items, and accepted the superintendent's report by voice votes. What the district will do next: Vidi said final audited FY25 numbers will be available after the external audit is complete in November, and work will continue to refine marketing and targeted canvassing strategies to improve enrollment at low‑utilization schools.
