Angelique Peterson Mayberry was chosen board president during the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Jan. 12 organizational meeting after nominations and a roll-call vote. The board also confirmed Deborah Hunter Harville as vice president, Misha Stallworth West as secretary and Sonia Mays as treasurer, then moved to make committee and external-organization appointments.
The board opened nominations for president after the superintendent read procedures and called for nominations. Member Sonia Mays nominated Angelique Peterson Mayberry; Member Sherry Gaye Dagnogo nominated Deborah Hunter Harville. A roll-call vote was conducted and the board certified Peterson Mayberry as president. Karen Morgan conducted the roll call during the vote.
Following the presidential election, the board approved additional officer positions. Deborah Hunter Harville accepted the nomination for vice president and the board approved that nomination by voice vote. Misha Stallworth West accepted the secretary nomination and Sonia Mays accepted the treasurer nomination; both were approved by voice vote.
The board then confirmed internal committee rosters: the Finance Committee (chair Sonia Mays; members Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and Misha Stallworth West), the Curriculum and Academic Committee (chair Bishop Carletta Vaughn; members Deborah Hunter Harville and Georgia Lemons), the Policy Ad Hoc Committee (chair Misha Stallworth West; members Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and Sonia Mays), and the Code of Conduct Hearing Committee (chair Georgia Lemons; member Bishop Carletta Vaughn). The chair noted that committee work will return reports to the full board.
Board members also accepted external appointments and statutory obligations. The chair and treasurer (Angelique Peterson Mayberry and Sonia Mays) will attend required Financial Review Commission meetings. The board appointed representatives to the Michigan Association of School Boards, Wayne County Association of School Boards and the Detroit Public Library Commission, among others.
The organizational portion of the meeting concluded with the board’s announcement that public comment for the organizational meeting was closed and the body moved into the regular board meeting that followed.
Actions recorded at the meeting included the formal election of officers and unanimous voice approvals for vice president, secretary and treasurer nominations. The board instructed staff to provide committee schedules and to circulate appointment details to members.
The board adjourned the organizational meeting portion and continued with the regular meeting agenda at 5:30 p.m.
