Auburn Hills — The City Council unanimously approved a motion on April 7 to appoint the Kelly Firm as the city’s general counsel and city attorney of record, effective 12:01 a.m. on April 8, 2025.
City Manager Tom Tangi outlined the recruitment process and noted the council’s decision followed an appropriate selection procedure. Tangi also acknowledged long‑time city attorney Dirk Beckerleg’s nearly four decades of municipal service and said Beckerleg would remain engaged with Auburn Hills matters until his law firm retirement on April 15, 2025.
Dan Kelly introduced himself to the council and said his firm — previously located in Auburn Hills and recently relocated to Royal Oak — represents multiple neighboring communities in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties and includes about eight lawyers. Kelly said he looks forward to working with the city and its staff.
Councilmember Kevin McDaniel made the motion to appoint the Kelly Firm; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Council members offered tributes to Beckerleg for his 36 years with Auburn Hills and his municipal law career. Beckerleg delivered brief remarks thanking council and staff and said he considered Auburn Hills an important client and community.
Next steps: The Kelly Firm becomes the attorney of record on April 8, and Beckerleg will remain available through his law firm until his April 15 retirement, according to comments at the meeting.
