A wave of public comment at the Detroit Public Schools Community District board meeting on July 8 centered on the Academy of the Americas (AOA), where parents, teachers and alumni urged support for Principal Nicholas Brown and expressed frustration about social‑media posts and the pace of the district’s response to allegations now under investigation.
Lorena Salazar, a 26‑year DPSCD teacher, described Brown as “an exceptional school leader” and said staff and families at AOA have been unfairly targeted. “Mr. Brown is very remarkable and is genuine, caring,” she said. Multiple speakers echoed that support and described a community feeling intimidated by a parent who has posted allegations online.
Several speakers described an ongoing internal investigation and asked for a public statement from the district; board members cautioned that because an inquiry is open the board cannot discuss specific details until the investigation is complete. Board members asked those with complaints to submit written documentation by email so staff can ensure the investigation is not prejudiced by public remarks.
Thomas Noyes and other supporters said social posts had “maligned” the school community; the board’s point of order reiterated that discussing names or investigatory specifics in open session could interfere with legal processes. Parents said they had emailed complaints and sought more timely responses; the board and superintendent asked for patience while staff complete an external review and promised to respond when the investigation is finalized.
The district’s superintendent also addressed related procurement and conflict‑of‑interest questions raised during public comment (see separate coverage). The board did not take any personnel action during the meeting and asked staff to provide updates to the board and complainants once the investigation is concluded.
