Angelique Peterson Mayberry was elected president of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Board of Education during the board’s Jan. 12 organizational meeting, the board announced after a roll-call vote.
The board accepted nominations and held a roll-call for president after Dr. Nikolai Aviti, serving as presiding officer for the organizational meeting, opened nominations. Mayberry was nominated by Sonya Mays and accepted; Deborah Hunter Harville was nominated by Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and accepted. A roll-call vote produced a majority in favor of Mayberry; the superintendent then relinquished the chair to the new president.
Why it matters: The election sets leadership for the 2021 board year and determines who will represent the board on outside bodies and in daily governance. Board leadership also directs committee assignments and the public-facing priorities for the district.
In the same organizational meeting the board confirmed other officer roles: Deborah Hunter Harville as vice president, Misha Stallworth West as secretary and Sonia Mays as treasurer. Each nominee accepted the nomination and was approved by the board by voice vote.
The board also completed a slate of committee appointments. Examples include Sonya Mays as chair of the finance committee and Bishop Carletta Vaughn as chair of the curriculum and academic committee. Internal task-force assignments were made for the Online Learning Task Force, the DPSCD Police Department Oversight Committee and a Safety Task Force. The board noted that committee work will come back to the full board for review.
A procedural vote approved Karen Morgan as the district’s designated post for public meeting notices and ratified the 2021 regular meeting calendar.
Memberships and next steps: The agenda included annual memberships to professional organizations such as the Council of Urban Boards of Educators (CUBE) and the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB). Board members questioned whether membership and related professional-development costs were properly budgeted. Bishop Carletta Vaughn moved that approval be subject to verification of the actual amounts; that led to a motion to withdraw one membership item (item 8.03) until staff can confirm line-item costs. The board carried the motion to withdraw and asked Karen Morgan and finance staff to provide full cost details before returning the item to the board.
What’s next: The newly elected officers will begin leadership duties immediately. Committee chairs will convene their teams and report back to the full board. The membership item will return to the board after staff provides the requested financial detail.
