The Detroit Public Schools Community District board held its organizational meeting Jan. 12, swearing in newly elected board member Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and confirming reelected members Sonia Mays and Misha Stallworth West. The board then elected Angelique Peterson Mayberry as president after a roll‑call vote and completed the slate of officers for the 2021 term.
In nominations that began after the swearing‑in ceremony, Sonya Mays nominated Angelique Peterson Mayberry for president and another member nominated Doctor Deborah Hunter Harville. A roll‑call for the Peterson Mayberry nomination recorded yes votes from Sonya Mayes and Misha Stallworth and no votes from Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and Deborah Hunter Harville; Georgia Lemons and Bishop Corletta Vaughn voted yes; the chair declared Angelique Peterson Mayberry elected president following the tally. Deborah Hunter Harville accepted the vice‑president nomination and was approved by voice; Misha Stallworth West accepted the board secretary role; Sonia Mays accepted the treasurer role.
The board also appointed members to standing committees. The finance committee will be chaired by Sonia Mays with Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and Misha Stallworth West as members. Bishop Carletta Vaughn will chair the curriculum and academic committee with Deborah Hunter Harville and Georgia Lemons serving as committee members. Misha Stallworth West was named chair of the policy ad hoc committee with Sherry Gaye Dagnogo and Sonia Mays as members.
The board designated Karen Morgan as the official for posting meeting notices and ratified the district’s 2021 board meeting calendar. Several external representation roles were assigned, including delegates to the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and alternates to the Wayne County Association of School Boards.
The board chair asked staff to circulate committee calendars and contact information for members; the board said committees will report back to the full board. Formal approvals in this article refer to motions and votes recorded on the Jan. 12 transcript; individual roll‑call entries are recorded in the meeting actions list.
