Boone County opts into Purdue Pharma Sackler settlement in national opioid reorganization

Boone County Fiscal Court voted unanimously Aug. 19 to approve two resolutions related to the national Purdue Pharma bankruptcy and associated settlements stemming from opioid litigation.
County Attorney Jordan Turner explained the two-step action: first, approving Purdue's bankruptcy plan (which contains a broad settlement) and second, authorizing Boone County's participation in the Purdue Direct Settlement that resolves claims tied to the Sackler family. Turner said the national settlement is projected to generate roughly $6.5 billion to be split among states, counties and municipalities; Boone County must opt in to receive its portion of the allocation.
Turner noted Boone County's litigation against Purdue began in 2018 and that Purdue entered bankruptcy in 2019; the court's action authorizes participation and execution of necessary documents. The county's eventual net share has not yet been calculated and filings and distributions will follow the national settlement process.
Commissioners approved both resolutions by unanimous voice vote. Staff said further breakdowns and specific allocations to the county will be reported once the national plan and allocation mechanics are finalized.
