Auburn Hills approves $261,339 contract for two on-site lift-station generators

The Auburn Hills City Council voted May 5 to award a $261,339 contract to DES Electric for the purchase and installation of two on-site natural-gas generators at two sewage lift stations.

Director of Public Works Steve Veil Dante told the council the city operates three critical lift stations and currently relies on three portable generators, two of which are nearing end of life and are difficult to transport in bad weather. Dante said the city issued a bid for two natural-gas generators to serve the Grama (Gray) Road and Lake Angeles lift stations; DES Electric of Detroit submitted the low bid and was recommended based on experience and references. Staff told the council the project is included in the budget and will include screening for aesthetic impact. “The project has been adequately budgeted and will include extensive screening for aesthetic appeal,” Dante said.

Councilor Ferguson asked about remaining life expectancy for the existing Executive Hills generator and service life for the new units. Dante said Executive Hills’ unit has about 7–10 years remaining, the two units being replaced date from 1988 and 1998, and the new generators are projected to last 25–30 years.

Councilor Ferguson moved to approve the contract with DES Electric to purchase and install two on-site generators for two sewage lift stations in the amount of $261,339; Councilor Knight seconded the motion and the council voted to approve it.

Why it matters: fixed, on-site generators reduce the city's operational risk during power outages and limit the logistical challenges of transporting trailer-mounted units during inclement weather. The capital purchase was described as budgeted and expected to provide multi-decade service life.

What’s next: Public Works will finalize contract details with DES Electric and schedule installation work.
