Burton DDA debates matching-mailbox proposal; USPS rules and DPW policy complicate plan

The Burton Downtown Development Authority discussed a proposed matching-mailbox project during its June 26 meeting and expressed reservations about implementation and unintended visual effects.
Some board members said rows of matching mailboxes could draw attention away from streetscape improvements such as flowers and building signs. The board also recalled previous opposition from the United States Postal Service to mandatory uniform mailboxes. Madam Secretary (Katie) cautioned that the city’s Department of Public Works currently provides only $25 toward replacing a damaged mailbox, a figure several members said is insufficient in today’s market.
Members agreed that any matching-mailbox program would require consultation with the USPS and further review before the board pursued design or cost-sharing options. No formal vote was taken; the topic will remain under discussion as the board continues its downtown beautification efforts.
