Downtown Development Authority approves final payment for Burton welcome monument

The Downtown Development Authority voted to pay the remaining balance to Dopp Signs for the Burton welcome monument and confirmed the installed wording and finish are as previously approved.

Board members said the sign contract totaled about $34,008.50, with half already paid and $17,425 remaining. After a brief discussion about whether a second vote was needed to release the final payment, the board moved and voted to authorize the controller to pay the outstanding balance.

"I'll make that motion," said Steve Coates before the board moved to approve the payment; the motion received support and carried on voice vote. Members said the contractor had finished site seeding and raking and would return if the lighting did not function once connected.

The board also discussed minor finish and maintenance items: members reported the monument is level and plumb and noted that electrical work to power the monument lighting will require a separate contractor. Members emphasized that changing the verbiage on the sign would be costly and that the installed phrase "welcome to city of Burton" reflected the wording the council previously approved.

Next steps: the chair will notify the controller to issue payment to Dopp Signs for the remaining balance and staff will monitor the electrical hookup and any final punch-list items.
