The City of Novi council voted 7–0 on Aug. 25 to dissolve the previous Novi Youth Council structure and adopt a new quarterly forum and appointment process intended to increase student participation from across the city’s schools and community groups.
Staff presented the proposal as a shift from a standing youth council requiring ongoing commitments toward a more flexible, issue‑driven forum that would invite students to provide input on specific topics. Mayor Pro Tem Casey and other councilmembers described the change as an effort to encourage wider engagement and suggested linking the new forum to the city’s Ambassador Academy and to existing youth appointments on committees where feasible.
Council discussed cadence and liaison roles; staff recommended starting with quarterly gatherings and expanding if interest and participation grow. The council instructed staff to return options to the administration for inclusion in the next budget‑planning cycle. The motion to approve staff’s recommendation passed by roll call 7–0.
Next steps: staff will publish details about the new youth forum cadence, the application/appointment process and outreach to area high schools.
