Hill told the commission the original 2019 estimate was $1.9 million, while the current estimate is approximately $5.2 million; federal CMAQ funds through the Metropolitan Planning Organization and a $180,000 state contribution cover a large portion of the additional cost. The city's share is proposed to increase from $265,214 to $522,000, a difference of $256,786, and staff said these funds have been budgeted within the park and recreation maintenance list for fiscal year 2026.
Public supporters including Rebecca Ingham and Brett Downey noted the project’s recreation and safety benefits. Commission discussion noted the decade-long span between estimates and rising costs; the commission approved the amendment on a voice vote.
