Belgrade manager reports splash pad vandalism and sewer pump damage, urges vigilance

City Manager Cardwell informed the council that staff discovered intentional damage to the splash pad’s drain troughs and filter/pump assemblies, likely rendering the amenity out of service for the remainder of the season given parts and repair time. Cardwell said repairs will incur costs borne by the city and staff are focusing on restoring the facility for next year.

Cardwell also described a separate sewer incident in the Ryan Glen neighborhood where cut‑up T‑shirt rags intentionally or negligently flushed into a lift station fouled pumps and caused damage costing “tens of thousands of dollars” to repair. He urged residents to report vandalism to the police department non‑emergency line and said police are increasing patrols in park areas.

Councilmembers suggested additional preventive measures such as installing cameras or live feeds at park facilities to provide visibility and deter vandalism, an idea parks staff indicated they would continue to evaluate. Cardwell said the city had posted a public Facebook notice about the splash pad damage but had not declared the amenity closed for the full season while staff await parts and repair options.

No formal action was taken at the meeting beyond direction to staff to pursue repairs, increase communication, and encourage public reporting of suspicious activity.
