Belgrade resident urges limits on loud “boom” fireworks, cites impact on pets and elderly

Eileen Savage, of 804 Amsterdam Boulevard in Belgrade, urged the council during public forum to restrict sale and use of loud “boom” fireworks within city limits, saying the explosions begin several days before July 4 and cause distress to pets and older residents. “The loud booms are hard on dogs, horses, and the elderly,” Savage said, adding that the blasts “shoot right through my nervous system” and that she “nearly always jump[s] or jerk[s] every time.”
The council did not take action on fireworks at the meeting; Mayor and council members later discussed that the city currently permits consumer fireworks during a limited window (first through fifth of July) and that some residents believe others were not respecting the allowed hours. Council members said staff could respond to complaints and that community expectations around hours and enforcement have been raised in recent communications to council.
