Commissioners approve contracts for Marshall Mountain wildfire mitigation project

Missoula County commissioners voted to approve two contracts authorizing work on a 65-acre wildfire mitigation and forest-health project at Marshall Mountain Park.
County staffer Jackson Lee presented the contracts, describing the project as the first phase of the Marshall Mountain Community Forest Plan with the goals of improving forest health, reducing wildfire risk and protecting the trail system. Work is expected to begin in September and continue until snowfall, with no planned trail closures; the presenter noted machinery will be operating near trails.
Lee identified funding sources that include the Missoula County Wildfire Program, a Forest Action Plan grant from the DRC and a contribution from the nonprofit Friends of Marshall Mountain. After a brief discussion and an indicated motion to approve both items together, the board voted by voice to approve the contracts. Commissioners thanked staff for fundraising and partnership development.
The contracts were approved during the consent/vote portion of the meeting and will allow contracting to proceed for project implementation this fall.
