Gallatin County approves contract awards and hears FY26 budget requests

Consent and contract actions: The commission approved the consent agenda after a staff correction to a track skid‑steer contract amount (updated to $129,515). The commission awarded a pavement preservation contract for the Montfort‑Fort Corners path to CK May Excavating for $278,650.75; Levi Ewen, county engineer, said the contract allows 90 days from notice to proceed to complete work before winter. The commission also approved the Gunther tenant improvements contract to Golden Eagle Construction for $395,400; staff noted an estimated $10,000 budget amendment would be required to cover the bid amount.
Preliminary budget hearing: CFO Justine Swanson explained the timeline for FY26 budget completion: certified taxable valuation from the Department of Revenue is expected in early August, a final budget work session is scheduled for Aug. 7 (with an optional Aug. 12 session if needed), and the last preliminary hearing is Aug. 5. Several departments placed requests on the record: road department requests to use reserves to buy two mower tractors ($160,000 each, total $320,000); the Sheriff’s office noted delayed HEART grant revenue; Emergency Management and other offices listed grant revenues to recognize (community fire protection $65,000; community wildfire defense $42,252; volunteer fire assistance $428.91) and one‑time requests including a $110,000 crew truck and a $9,742.85 discounted vendor offer to retry an employee alerting project.
Next steps: The commission will consider all requests at an August 7 work session after receiving certified valuation from the Department of Revenue; Item 6 (Anderson Meadows preliminary plat) was continued to Aug. 19. The meeting was adjourned.
