The Newton City Commission on Monday received a petition annexation for property at 2903 South Kansas and approved the annexation and zoning ordinances that will bring the property into city limits and assign single-family (R-1) zoning.
Chris, speaking for the planning commission, explained this is a petition annexation initiated by the property owners. He said the property is single-family in character and the planning commission recommended R-1 zoning. Staff confirmed utilities are adjacent, so the owners would not require main extensions; however, the parcel currently uses a septic system and a private well and would be required to abandon the septic, purchase a tap and connect to city sewer and water if annexed.
The commission moved to receive the annexation request and approved Ordinance 5186-25 to effect the annexation, then received the planning commission recommendation and approved Ordinance 5187-25 to set R-1 zoning. Motions were approved by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will record the annexation with the register of deeds and update city boundary maps; property owners will follow standard procedures to purchase utility taps and connect to city services.
