Board authorizes executive committee to hire bus drivers between meetings amid shortage

The Benton County Board of Education voted unanimously to give the executive committee authority to hire certified bus drivers prior to the next board meeting, provided candidates meet all required certifications, background checks and other district requirements.
Commissioner Livingston moved the measure and Commissioner Marks seconded it. Livingston framed the motion as a pragmatic response to a driver shortage that could leave the district short-staffed while new hires complete state certification timelines. "You are voting on allowing the executive committee to hire a bus driver prior to the next meeting as long as the bus driver meets all the requirements," Miss Michelle read aloud during roll call preparation.
Members discussed the timeline for certification and noted that filling two drivers would substantially alleviate current routing pressures; one board member pointed out that for some candidates the approval process can take two months. After questions and clarifications, the board conducted a roll-call vote; the chair recorded "8 yes," and the motion passed.
The board agreed the hire would be recorded in the minutes and the hire would be placed on the following month's agenda for formal ratification as required by board policy.
