Commission discusses traffic safety on Elm and 26, translation pilot and staffing updates

Traffic safety topped miscellaneous business during the June 17 Hastings Planning Commission meeting as commissioners pressed staff for studies and next steps.

Lee (staff) said crossings described as "quiet crossings" remain in progress and reported traffic counts on North Elm/20th Street showing "about a thousand more vehicles, daily up there," an increase attributed to the college and construction activity. Lee said staff will send the counts to Olsen's for re-evaluation and that lowering the speed limit on 20th Street and adding turn lanes could be considered; he indicated a staff plan to bring a speed-limit change to city council in the coming months.

Mayor (unnamed) reiterated the importance of addressing safety at 26 and Elm and said he has received multiple phone calls on the issue: "Whatever we can do there to make that as safe as we can, I think that's a great idea," he said.

Commissioner Jody asked about a pilot program for translation/interpreting devices in Development Services. Amber Batzlan said staff have been testing the technology but have not yet had many clients who need translation and that family members often provide translation; staff are continuing to explore potential uses.

Other updates included building inspections and project progress (Anthony reported work at Providence Place, Prairie Loft and the M-126 project). The commission also discussed two vacancies on the commission; one seat requires a resident within a two-mile radius and appointments were expected once applications were completed.

The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn; the commission adjourned by unanimous voice vote.
