Albany board approves $71,800 purchase of distribution wire after single bid

The Albany Utility Board on Aug. 14 authorized staff to enter a purchase contract with TriState Utility Products of Marietta for 20,000 feet of 1/0 aluminum utility wire at a total price of $71,800.
Procurement staff reported that 11 vendors were directly solicited for bid reference 2582 and that only one response was received. The materials report said staff followed up with non‑bidding vendors to determine why, and two vendors indicated they do not supply the requested product. Warehouse and operations staff explained that 20,000 feet is a typical on‑hand level, sufficient for about half to three‑quarters of a year depending on capital projects, and that lead time from order to delivery is approximately six to eight weeks.
Board members asked why there was only one bidder; staff suggested market conditions and high demand for product in the private sector as a likely reason. Warehouse staff described 1/0 aluminum as an industry standard conductor used across distribution systems and noted the utility has planned capital projects that will consume some of the ordered inventory.
The chair moved to authorize the contract; the motion was seconded and the board adopted the purchase on a roll-call vote.
Next steps: staff will place the purchase order and coordinate delivery and inventory staging with the warehouse so the material is available for planned projects.
