Detective Dorel Wagner of the Louisville Metro Police Department’s traffic unit told the Code Enforcement Board he observed two vehicles racing on I‑264 westbound near mile marker 11 on Feb. 11, 2025, recording speeds of about 123–124 mph for the first vehicle and 119 mph for the second.
Wagner said his radar and video show the cars side‑by‑side at extremely high speed and that he conducted a multi‑vehicle stop; he characterized the incident as a vehicle‑speed contest and expressed concerns about the risk of fatal injury at those speeds. “My radar actually caught them at a 124, and the second one was doing a 119 miles an hour,” Wagner said.
The defendant, Justin Smith, was not present; defense counsel requested a scheduling accommodation and the board agreed to pass the matter to March 14 at 09:30. The hearing record indicates the county planned to present video evidence to establish the citation conditions if the case proceeds.
What happens next: the case is continued to March 14; the detective’s video and radar logs are in the hearing file and may be offered as evidence at the next hearing.
