Livonia plans to replace aging generators at two fire stations and a DPW building

The Department of Public Works told council on July 7 it plans to replace aging standby generators at Fire Stations 3 and 6 and at the Building Maintenance facility (Building 13). DPW said existing units are generally more than 15–20 years old and some do not power entire buildings.
Bids were solicited; DPW recommended awarding the project to the lowest qualified bidder (American Generators). Council discussion included the age of the current generators and a per‑site cost breakdown offered by DPW: approximately $272,000 for Fire Station 3, $385,000 for Fire Station 6 and $335,000 for the maintenance building. Staff said the total project estimate discussed was roughly $989,000 and that replacement will provide full‑building backup in some locations that lack it today.
Councilmembers asked about disposition of removed units; DPW said salvageable parts are reused and remaining equipment is auctioned if no internal need exists. The department indicated work could begin quickly following formal award at the July 21 meeting.
The item was presented during the study session and staff said it would return for formal action at the regular meeting.
