Commission approves court workstation reconfiguration, lockdown system, computers, fire engine replacement and road rehab contract

Kentwood City Commissioners on May 20 approved a package of operational contracts and equipment purchases for courts, public safety and streets.
Court staff requested and received approval to add two workstations in the 62B District Court (one for a judge and one for an intern/volunteer) by reusing compatible Steelcase components to limit cost; staff described the plan as a short-to-mid-term solution while awaiting a statewide JRR report on court funding and staffing. Court staff also requested a lockdown feature for court doors so authorized staff could engage a system-wide lockdown during an internal or external threat; staff described the feature as a button that would lock front and courtroom doors while still permitting law enforcement access. "So we are requesting to add a lockdown system... in the event of an internal or external threat, court security or whomever can press a button, the front doors would lock down," a court representative said.
The commission authorized the planned purchase of 20 replacement desktop computers that had been included in the budget. The commission also approved a recommendation to replace the engine in a 2018 Spartan fire truck after third-party dyno testing identified internal engine damage; the replacement work is proposed to be performed by Cummins and includes a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty and a 10% contingency. "Based on the cost, we're recommending engine replacement... Cummins is going to do this work for us," a staff presenter said.
Finally, the commission authorized the mayor to sign a contract with Black Gold Transport for rehabilitation of Bridal Avenue and Kalamazoo Avenue for a not-to-exceed amount of $632,432, including a 10% contingency. Staff discussed schedule coordination and traffic handling for the summer work and said Bretton Avenue paving would be timed to avoid major local events. All items were approved by motion and passed during the meeting.
