Tewksbury resident urges County Commissioners to oppose federal Medicaid cuts; director says federal matter premature for county action
Summary
A Tewksbury resident told the board proposed federal Medicaid cuts would 'devastate' local services and asked the county to pass a resolution opposing the changes; Director Lanza replied the board typically avoids weighing in on federal legislation and called it premature because a bill has not become law.

During the public-comment portion of the June 3 meeting, Guy Citron of Tewksbury urged the Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners to oppose proposed federal changes to Medicaid and other safety-net programs, saying the plan "will devastate Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and other critical programs like SNAP." Citron said an estimated "over 10,000 people in need depend on Medicaid" in the county, including "more than 4,400 children." He asked the board to make a public statement and to place a resolution opposing the cuts on the next agenda.
In response later in the meeting, Director Lanza said the board generally avoids weighing in on federal matters and that it would be premature to take a formal position because, in his words, "a bill becomes a law by passing both houses and then going to the executive for a signature. That has not happened. There is no law that has been enacted." He told the audience the board would continue to focus on its statutory duties at the county level.
The meeting record shows Citron's request and the director's procedural reply; the board did not take a vote on a resolution related to federal Medicaid changes at this meeting.
What happens next: the county did not place a county-level resolution on the record opposing federal action during this meeting; any future board action would need to be introduced and scheduled as an agenda item.
