Oak Park to replace yield signs with stop signs on Kipling Street after traffic study

Oak Park — The City Council adopted Traffic Control Order No. 160 (section 1.35) directing replacement of existing yield signs on Kipling Street with stop signs following a Transportation Improvement Association (TIA) study.
Public Safety Director Steve Cooper and city engineer Kara Grisma summarized the TIA work, which reviewed crash data, field conditions, volume and speed counts and a safe approach speed calculation. Cooper said the study recommended maintaining the existing intersection control on Kipling and replacing yield signs with stop signs at the intersection evaluated.
Council members expressed support, citing resident complaints and examples where stop signs diverted commercial traffic from residential streets. Cooper cautioned that stop signs are not primarily a speed-control device and recommended a systematic approach for other locations; several councilors said they expect more traffic-control requests across the city.
Council moved and approved the traffic-control order on roll call. Commissioner discussion noted the change responds to persistent neighborhood concerns and that city staff will consider broader traffic-study priorities.
The traffic control order was adopted by unanimous vote of those present; the city indicated implementation will proceed through the engineering and public-safety departments.
